you've got to watch out for the fog. that day planner, we'll be stuck with the low clouds and fog much of the morning. it's on the cool side but not terrible. 60 in town. some areas low to mid-50s in the suburbs with highs later 70 to 75 and i expect the sunshine to be returning for the afternoon. sunrise 7:09. there are the showers over the last couple of showers slowly drifting from around colonial beach across the river toward swan point and southern st. mary's county. this has drifted into the bay. here it is around swan point back toward colonial beach slowly drifting east. not much to this and very, very isolated. fog a little more widespread. we have quarter mile visibility frederick, gaithersburg, over toward dulles. so it's into loudoun county. much of fairfax with quarter after mile. south and west of town the fog is not nearly as bad till you head southeast where many areas in southern maryland still have advice i can'ts half-mile to quarter mile. a quick look at temps, in the mid-50s to about 60 here in washington.

it's now 5:00 a.m. monika santami, fog is going to be a major factor for a lot of drivers this morning. it s. you might want to give yourself a little extra time to deal with it. otherwise the lanes are open around town. no major factors other than the fog this morning. that includes the beltway on the north side of town, all these northern corridors heading southbound and 270 as well. let's take a look live outside. here's what it looks like over in damascus on ridge road. it is a bit foggy as you head for 270 and then down toward rockville it's going to affect you as well. we go back over to the maps this time i-95 over baltimore. all of these corridors are incident free into college park which is where we'll look live. leaving the 895 interchange -- the 95 interchange into silver spring, things are looking fine. in my next report we'll go into virginia at 5:10. decisive victory have some analysts calling last night a turning point in campaign

2012. >> ron paul and newt gingrich were both in single digits. mitt romney won with 47% of the vote. delia goncalves is live with more. >> reporter: good morning. it seems that romney spent some big money for that big win in illinois last night. $3 million in fact for a series of tv campaign ads in that state. romney won amongest voters there who said their primary concerns were the economy and beating local son barack obama. rick santorum won major victories last week in mississippi and alabama but romney came back strong sunday with a big win when he took puerto rico. >> we know our future's brighter than these troubled times. we still believe in america. and we deserve a president who believes in us. and i believe in the american people. >> we're heading to louisiana for the rest of the week. then we're going to be back

health services for young people in the district. the d.c. city council passed south capitol street memorial act yesterday. it is named for a march 2010 shooting which killed four young people. they were gunned down while they were at a funeral for another victim of violence. council members are hoping these reforms they've enacted will better identify and treat young people before they resort to violence. arlington county's police chief has rescind add memo that appeared to set ticket quotas for officers. chief douglas scott called the memo pro activity expectations 2012 a mistake. the memo listed numbers of tickets and further stated that officers could be disciplined for failing to reach those goals. six teachers have filed a lawsuit against montgomery county principal and the board of education. the plaintiffs are current or former teachers at kent mill elementary school in silver spring. they accuse the principal of bullying staff members for

years. the allegations include inappropriate touching, being told not to report suspected child abuse, possible falsification of personnel files, even threats of retaliation. the board is accused of knowing about the problems and not taking action. the school system spokesperson says the previous investigation found that these allegations have little or no merit. 5:05. time for the latest your money report of the morning. ned line time. jessica doyle has it. good morning. >> good morning. we'll have to see you in economic data is enough to fire up investors today, get them back in rally mode. wall street suffered only the second decline in two weeks yesterday. stocks down after data from china pointed to a slowdown there. checking the numbers the dow stands this morning at 13,170. dropped about 69 points in trading yesterday. nasdaq and s&p both lost about four points. don't expect to use your phone while in flight any time soon, but you may be able to keep the e-reader on during takeoff of. the federal aviation

administration is reviewing the ban on some electronics while in flight. e-readers, tablets and some other tech gadgets may soon be allowed to stay on during takeoff and landing. we know they're hot sellers but the new ipad may be hot in a different way as well. apple comment boards are being flooded by people saying the tablets are getting too hot to hold. consumer reports investigated and they found that the new ipads do run hotter than their predecessors but they're not especially uncomfortable. they can get as hot as 116 degrees, an increase of 12 degrees. the company says the devies are performing within -- devices are performing within their specks. >> i just love this thing. >> what two you have -- what do you have us for when we come back? >> we hate spam. we hate it on our phones. we may have a way to get rid of

hundreds of homes are damaged but only about a dozen people were injured. first daughter malia obama is in mexico with some classmates. none were injured. two police officers were injured in a shootout with a man suspected of opening fire on a jewish school on monday killing three students and a rabbi. the suspect claims to be a member of al qaeda and is also believed to have killed three paratroopers in an earlier shooting. it may have been a little late but president obama celebrated st. patrick's day yesterday at the white house along with the irish prime minister. president obama presented him with a certificate of his irish heritage which he joagingly said he'll display right alongside his birth certificate. many parents worry about their kids' activity on-line. now maryland's top law enforcement official is giving a crash course on cybersafety. that's coming up at 5:32. at 5:22, peyton panning talks about his decision to pick the denver broncos.

welcome back to 9 news now. fog is a problem this morning. >> sure is. some areas have fog visibility a quarter mile or less. may drop a few miles -- may drive a few miles and it's okay and then more fog.

the fog could get thicker before the sun starts to work its magic and burn it off. the low clouds and fog around. thankfully we don't have much in the way of rain to talk about here. we'll show you doppler in just a moment. temperatures running from the low 50s in the cool spots to the lower 60s in town. we're up to 61 at reagan national last check. that sunrise at 7:09. we'll see the sun this afternoon being stuck with the clouds most of the morning. by afternoon we'll start to break it up midday. upper 60s to near 70 by 1:00. highs today between 70 and 75 with 72-degree reading at 3:00 p.m. slightly warmer as you go west, maybe culpeper and fredricksburg you may be mid up forker 70s. we could -- mid- to upper 70s. we could have 70s, even 80s by the time we get to friday. we're looking at showers and storms from yesterday evening well out to our west and southwest. this morning just a couple of things there over toward

colonial beach and dahlgren and out toward swan point and even the tip of st. mary's county. isolated showers. those two basically. your advice ils are down a quarter mile -- visibilities are down a quarter mile gaithersburg, westminster. they're reporting half. there are going to be pockets of visibilities, even a quarter mile or less. it goes toward calvert county, st. mary's county. andrews air force base a half mile. fog a much bigger issue i think than anything else this morning. temperatures ranging from 57 in gaithersburg. columbia and crofton are at 58. very uniform this morning with fairfax and reston at 58. cool spots manassas, leesburg, they're running at 55. as we look outside on our michael & son weather camera, some fog. visibility slightly better than the last time we checked on our weather camera with 61 degrees. cloudy skies being reported at reagan national. visibility at last check was anywhere from a half mile to mile quarter. the dew points in the upper

50s. big storm system in the middle of the country bringing the cold air into the rockies. still snowing in the ski areas here but 60s, even 70s now coming up the mississippi valley with all of this moisture being cranked up. this is like a pump. you can see the upper level low spinning in west texas. it just continues to suck moisture right off the gulf of mexico and dump on louisiana, dump on arkansas. some of these rains getting into south central missouri. that storm system heads our way for the weekend. so that saturday and sunday it's not going to be a deluge of what we're looking at out there but certainly it's going to turn more settled. more clouds, showers, storms. temperatures will be down in the 60s instead of 70s and 80s. as we look at the forecast, today about 73. some areas may make 75 south and west with more sun this afternoon. once we get rid of the low clouds and fog, slight chance of a shower. 10%, 20%. tonight back in the 50s to near 60. tomorrow afternoon sunshine after the morning low clouds and fog, 77. friday low 80s with more

sunshine. slight chance of an afternoon storm. storm chances pick up for the weekend as temperatures cool off. monday might have a lingering shower 68. tuesday sunny and seasonably cool, 65. average high now 58 degrees. what a winter spring now we've been having. >> i'm happy to say that besides the fog, things aren't looking too bad outside. good morning. the beltway is fine. it's incident free all around town. we'll head west this time. no problems on the dulles toll road out of leesburg, 66 out of centreville. let's take a live look there live right now in centreville. the lanes are open as you head inbound on 66 toward fairfax and the beltway and even to the roosevelt bridge. back over to the maps. this time let's head south on 95 northbound where you're going to see some volumes picking up if dale city up into woodbridge across the occoquan river. it's off and on right now. then it breaks free into newington. i'm going to show you what it looks like in newington. a big foggy. lanes are open in the main and hov lanes heading to 395 and

5:2 on this wednesday morning. the only --5:ten on this wednesday morning, the only shower is drifting toward st. mary's county. this shower in the bay has left st. mary's city, point lookout. so that's it. the fog a bigger deal. that's going to be with us. the showers off to our south and west not really a problem but through 9:00 this light green, it's really fog. there may be spotty drizzle here and there. temperatures slow to warm up. in the mid- to upper 60s by

and temperatures in the 60s which is still above average. here's the day planner for you on this wednesday morning. we have low clouds and fog in many areas. that fog is rather dense in many areas. by noon still generally cloudy. some sunny breaks here and there. this afternoon a stray shower or thundershower. i'm keeping it off the board with a 72 by 5:00. highs 70 to 75 degrees. coolest will be right by the bay. had a couple of showers toward dahlgren and colonial beach. you see it weakening as it drifts towards charles and st. mary's county. the shower in southern st. mary's is now on the bay. the visibilities are going to be around for a few more hours, the low ones with quarter mile visibility. dulles to leesburg to gaithersburg. half mile in frederick. north of town and southeast of town seems to be the worst. clearly give yourself extra time. use the low beams with the visibilities in many areas a quarter mile and even less. maybe a light jacket, mid-50s places like manassas and the

shenandoah valley to 61 with the fog at reagan national. it's now 5:28 monika santami is coming over to give you time saver traffic. i'm happy to say other than the fog which definitely is an issue this morning, we don't have any big problems to report. that's a good thing. if you're planning to head south on 270 out of frederick, damascus, clarksburg, you're going to be okay down to the point where the lanes divide. there is one accident reported on old georgetown road at route 355 in bethesda. a little further south on 270 at falls road, as you can see volumes are picking up down to the point where the lanes divide but all the lanes are open. back over to the map and this time we'll head to the south side of town. southern maryland, all the corridors are incident free. brandy wien, okay creek -- brandywine, okay creek. in new cacheton, this is a good -- new carrollton, this is a good indication of what it looks like the entire stretch of prince george's county on the east side of town of the beltway. next report we'll go into

virginia the 5:38. today a former mountain rainier police officer will be sentenced in a bizarre attack. >> gene gillette was off duty at the time of a shooting inside his home last july. prosecutors say gillette lured a home into capitol heights by offering him a role in a pornographic movie. but when no women showed up, police say the victim was shot when he rebuffed gillette's advances. gillette pleaded guilty to attempted murder charges last november. dozens of people marched in northwest washington last night in honor of three recent victims of possible hate crimes. the march began at the ihop at 14th and irving where police say a gay man was shot last weekend after being taunted by another restaurant customer. just a few days earlier, a gay man was beaten and robbed at georgia avenue and irvin street and a transgender woman was assaulted in northeast washington. mitt romney wins the first presidential contest of the week in illinois. deit by double digits. rick santorum could continue a

strong southern showing in saturday's primary in louisiana. both top republican contenders are making stops close to d.c. 9news now reporter delia goncalves is in our satellite center with the rundown of the events. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning, mike. the candidates are taking obtain win -- are taking their wins and delegates straight to the next primary. that means a stop later today in maryland. after last night's win romney is leading the pack with 534 delegates to santorum's 218. gingrich and paul are vowing to still stay in the race, though they are trailing with 120. and 42 delegates respectively. again 11 44 delegates are needed to clinch the nomination. >> historic highs in gas prices? a president who doesn't

lost about their children's online activity got some expert advice from maryland's top law enforcement officer. the attorney general doug ganzler hosted a cybersafety crash course last night at churchill high school in potomac. the materials for parents included guides to internet slang, abbreviations and phrases that are meant to be a sexual or bullying manner as well. >> i want to share this with my friend or do i want to create a smaller custom group of people that i'm comfortable sharing with. >> cyberexperts also counseled parents and students on how to use privacy settings on the social networking sites so you can limit access to sensitive information. over in virginia state lawmakers will reconvene today to restart talks on the state budget. the special session is necessary because the general assembly failed to agree on a spending plan before it adjourned march 10. talks between senior democratic and republican budget writers have been conjeanual so far.

coming up on 5:34, time for another your money report. >> you hate junk mail but one government service hopes you get more of it. jessica doyle is here with that. no, we don't want anymore. >> i don't know about you guys but every time i go to my mailbox, i pull everything up. about 85% of what i get gets pitched. well the united postal service would like to see that percentage wide. they want businesses to send you more direct mail to help them stretch their revenue stream by hundreds of millions of dollars, maybe a billion dollars. it's launching a new campaign called every door direct campaign. it would make it easier for spall businesses to microtarget junk mail to neighborhoods. spam finding its way from your e-mail to your cell phones nowadays. unwanted text messages from scammers, companies and sometimes political campaigns, boy, can they be annoying but the company gsma says it has a

way to put a stop to all the spam texts. if you get one, the company says you should forward the text to 7726. that's -- that spells spam. then you're going to get a message from your wireless carrier asking you to send the phone number from where the text originated from. some carriers give instructions on how to block text messages from specific numbers. just be aware there could be a cost associated with that service depending on your carrier. we are helping you to get hired today. there's a job fair this morning aimed at helping disabled veterans. events employers are joining with the wounded warrior project. today's event being held at the sheraton national hotel in arlington at 900 south orme street. vets will have an opportunity to network with local ployers. >> thanks -- with local employers. >> thanks, jess. you'll be back in a moment with daily deals. first, a new look at a

the lanes divide. the d.c. city council has voted to suspend enforcement of the new red top parking meters for 90 days. the red top meters require disabled drivers to pay for a parking space but they are allowed to stay twice as long. the previous free system led to people fraudulently using disabled placards but some council members say disabled drivers weren't consulted enough about the changes. and metro's subway maps are getting a makeover. the transit agency is showing off the new maps featuring updated station names, like gallaudet university instead of the new york avenue station. other new names include king street old town and navy yard ballpark. all the new names will be rolled out in the coming months. coming up in my next report, we'll take a look at virginia roads at 5:47. we've been combing through the day's daily deals, e-mails and retailer websites to find you deep discounts and two ice cream deals are among my favorites today. maybe you loved fuji the whale

very quiet on the radar this morning and our sunrise 7:09. the day planner clouds and fog 8:00. 60 degrees. as we head toward lunch time, though, upper 60s. still dealing with mostly cloudy skies. we may see a couple of breaks by then west of washington. we're looking at 62 with the sunshine at 4:00 p.m. slim chance one or two you may see a shower this afternoon. highs in the low to mid-70s. still in the upper 60s at 8:00 p.m. south winds at 5:00. looks like again the low clouds and fog will return late and toward tomorrow morning. showers and storms yesterday. a boundary helped trigger a few showers to the south overnight and this morning. what's left of them is falling apart in st. mary's county. visibilities will be a problem for the next few hours. quarter mile from leesburg to dulles to warrenton. manassas checking in with ten- mile visibility. half-mile stafford, quantico. lots of areas, even from reedville right on the bay there talking about the dense

ingredients. >> we'll do a spring lamb dinner composed with -- [indiscernible] a consomme. this is a leg of lamb. this will be itself entree. the second course would be zucchini. the third course will be a piece of leg of lamb roasted with potatoes, green onions, some spring garlic, very small and some herbs, rosemary and thyme. >> how do you prepare it? >> i start searing the lamb in olive oil. i season it first with salt and we're going to give it a nice color. >> what's in the pan? olive oil? >> olive oil, yes.

something unprecedented to share. videotape shot from inside a car moments before a deadly crash. like so many fatal crashes, this one involved young people, alcohol, and speed. andrea mccarren got this dramatic video and she brings us this expert. >> reporter: she was buck himmed into the front passenger seat videotaping her night out with friends. the police investigation indicates the car was traveling at 94 miles an hour in a 40 mile an hour zone. >> i wouldn't want anyone else, not even my worst enemy to walk in my shoes right now. >> reporter: the car barreled over a chain link fence and plowed into a brick embankment. the impact so violent action it flung parts of the car into tree branches and utility wires. >> you can see her report six deadly seconds in its entirety tonight on 9news now at 5:00 p.m. plus, the young woman behind

hindenburg and the titanic. 39 dogs seized from a puppy mill in kentucky are getting a new lease on life here. the dogs including dachshunds, miniature pinchers and ?awzers arrived at the washington national animal league yesterday. the puppy mill operator gave up more than 130 dogs after pleading guilty to animal cruelty charges. the dogs will be treated for any medical problems and the rescue league staff look to treat any socialization or psychological problems before available for adoption. >> very cute. i know you're looking for an animal. >> we are. we're debating and doing our research. >> thank you for watching 9news now at 6:00 a.m. after doing your reseven, you've turned to us. we appreciate that. i'm andrea roane. >> you made the right choice. i'm mike hydeck. here's monika
